Our health is our biggest asset – without it, life seems to fall apart. But usually we ignore our health until something goes wrong. We are so busy trying to juggle work, friends, family and partners that often there isn’t enough time to really worry about what’s going on with our health until we can no longer ignore it. This often results in us feeling our absolute worst and living with damage long before it’s too far gone. I have three health checks you need to do today to ensure that you’re in optimum health.
Sit Down in Silence
Yes, this is basically a type of meditation. If you’re interested in Yoga then you should look into a yin class at a local studio. Yin yoga is a type of yoga where you hold poses for a few minutes, generally 3-5, which provides you with ample time to do a body scan. But if you don’t want to go to yoga, you can easily do this in your home. Put some relaxing music on, dim the lights and either lay down flat on your back on a mat or something comfortable, or sit cross legged on the floor. Take a few minutes to ‘tune into’ how each part of your body feels: are your neck and shoulders tight? Do you have any aches and pains anywhere? Pay attention to these and assess whether they’re just day-to-day wear and tear, or whether there’s a deeper issue going on.
If you’re concerned about any problems, make an appointment with a physiotherapist or doctor to discuss your concerns. Don’t go through life living automatically without paying attention to what your body is saying to you.
Check Your Health Insurance Coverage
Do you have health insurance? Do you know how long it’s valid for? Maybe you don’t need health insurance but you have some kind of reciprocal health insurance agreement, like the EHIC : European Health Insurance Card. Check that your card or coverage is valid and not about to expire. If you’re nearing the end of the coverage, quickly apply online. You’ll never know when you’ll need it and it’s probably the last thing you’re thinking of when planning for a trip overseas.
Check Your Body Mass Index
Most of us would rather ignore the scales and pretend we still have the same weight we did when we were 18. This is dangerous with regards to your health as you can easily become very overweight without really noticing. The body mass calculation is an easy calculation taking your height and weight into consideration. Yes, it’s not a perfect formula, so if you’re working out at the gym and have a lot of muscle mass, then you’ll weigh more but still be a healthy size and composition for your height. It’s just an indication and a good thing to check in every so often.
These three simple health checks will ensure you’re taking the best care of your body. Feel free to check in every few months to make sure all your boxes are ticked.
