If you’ve recently moved, you’re planning to move, or you simply want to redecorate your home, you may be a little anxious or confused about exactly how you’ll get the job done.
It’s not that there’s not enough information out there, it’s more that you’re likely to be overwhelmed by all of the information and opinions available. Here are some tips for interior decorating this year:
Decide what you like
Think about colours, styles and textures that you’ve liked in the past. What was it that you liked about different rooms and homes? It can sometimes be hard to put your finger on exactly what your style is- whether you like minimalism, black and white, country-house style or something else. Defining how you want your home to look is the first step, and you can then know what you’re looking for when it’s time to buy your furniture, paint and everything else you need.
Make a budget
Going into interior decorating without budgeting first is dangerous, and you should have a good idea of exactly how much you can afford to spend. Once you know this budget it’s time to break it down into how much you’ll spend on each room. Some rooms may require more money than others, particularly if they’ve been left alone for awhile (and have 80’s wallpaper) and kitchens and bathrooms often cost more than living rooms and bedrooms.
Often one of the biggest things you’ll need to think about is the resale value of your home. If you’re planning to sell it in the future you’ll need to think about what will appeal to the most people. That means going for hardwood floors (if possible), investing in good window treatments with high-quality fabric, choosing your paint wisely (going for durable paints in neutral colours) and spending money in the kitchen and bathrooms.
If you’re not someone who is naturally talented when it comes to interior decorating, it can be a good idea to talk to the professionals. Hiring an interior decorator can be a good way to make sure that your home won’t age or date poorly and they’ll show you the best places to invest your money so it can be sold in the future. Even if you just need one consultation with an interior designer they can give you some great ideas.
Speak to the whole family
If you have a family, you probably already understand that you’re not the only one living in your home. Getting input from your spouse and kids is a great way to make them feel like their opinions matter and also takes some of the pressure off of you. Constantly making decisions is hard work, and you’ll probably find that your family has some great ideas about different looks and styles, particularly for their bedrooms. Have a family meeting and talk about each room, letting everyone give their opinion about what would look best.
