Proven Ways to stick to your diet

July 20, 2015 • Lifestyle

Starting a diet is an exciting thing – it means you’ve decided to focus on yourself and to take your health seriously. You’re ready to take action to improve your overall lifestyle and wellbeing. We start a diet with the best intentions, but after a few days or weeks we’re over it and barely sticking to it. Most diets fail, quite simply, so what can you do to improve the chances of sticking to your diet? Here are my favourite proven ways to stick to your diet.

1) Be Realistic

If your diet is too restrictive then you’re probably going to fail. Whether you fail in a day or a week doesn’t matter. Choosing something that doesn’t allow and breathing room and completely restricts your social life is probably not going to work in the long term. When you’re looking for a diet, ask yourself whether you can see yourself realistically doing it in a year, if your answer is no, move onto something more realistic and sustainable.

2) Track It

Getting a food tracking app is a great way to monitor what you’re eating and keep yourself motivated to stick on your diet. I’ve personally used MyFitnessPal to keep a track of what I’ve been eating and how much exercise I’ve been doing. There’s a bunch though, so hunt around and see what works best for you.

3) Get an Accountability Buddy

Chances are you’ve got at least one friend who would be happy to lose a few pounds – or maybe they have been trying with little success. Ask them if they’d like to be your accountability buddy and keep you motivated. In return you can keep them motivated too! Sharing successes, making joined goals and being supportive of each other is a great way to keep the motivation high ensuring faster results.

4) Remove Temptation From Your Home

My theory is, if it’s not there, then you can’t eat it. Have a problem eating cereal at midnight? Well, don’t buy it. Or if you have to buy it for other family members, try to buy brands you don’t like. Find it hard to eat nuts without going overboard? Don’t buy them, or pre packaged them into smaller portion sizes to help keep you in control. We’re naturally programmed to eat and eat, because of all the times our species survived when there were scarce resources, thankfully we’re not in that time period anymore, but we need to adjust our food consumption accordingly.

A diet can be a fun challenge, if you look at it with the right attitude. Congratulations for choosing to focus on your health. Hopefully with these proven ways to stick to your diet, this can be a very successful diet for you.
